Ramsgate is located on the mouth of a river known by the Zulu name Bilanhlolo ("the marvellous boiler") for the bubbles caused by strong currents making it look like the water is boiling. Ramsgate is very busy over the summer holidays in December and has protected swimming, a tidal pool as well as a fresh water pool, and a lagoon. It especially draws young crowds over the holidays.
